Working with our partners and community organisations, Glasgow City Council will have a communication plan to keep the public engaged and informed on the roll out of the 20mph programme.

Working with our partners and community organisations, Glasgow City Council will have a communication plan to keep the public engaged and informed on the roll out of the 20mph programme.

We will also put in place a system to monitor how effective this programme is and communicate the results.

Still sounds like this is being treated as much more complicated than it needs to be. Imagine if we were doing the reverse and raising speed limits say from 20mph to 30mph: would there need to be a "communication plan", public engagement campaigns, a managed "roll out", "working with partners", etc? Of course not, it'd basically happen overnight. Drivers would be cheering it on impatiently! The only reason that this is being treated as some hugely complex novel change is because everyone involved understands on some level that most motorists will moan about it and that many are unlikely to obey it. Speed limits are not a new concept, altering them (particularly to a consistent value over a wide urban area) should be simple to cope with for any *competent* motorist. The sooner 20mph limits arrive the better, but I still have concerns about enforcement given how much drivers are currently allowed to get away with.

Hi, Thank you for your comment and for your support in introducing a city-wide 20mph speed limit. As with any major change, we do need to let people know it's coming so they can prepare for change and of course share their views. We expect the vast majority of road users will welcome the new limit which we hope will help improve road user behaviour and reduce the number and severity of road collisions. We will monitor compliance levels as part of our planned evaluation programme and our colleagues in Police Scotland will undertake enforcement as part of their normal day to day duties.

That's great news thank you. We will of course keep community councils fully up to date with our planned programme.

Reducing the speed limit saves lives and has hardly any impact on journey times. Reducing the speed will also encourage people to cycle more as they will feel safer joining traffic which is moving at a slower pace. Its already been proven to work well in other cities. The problem will be enforcement of the 20mph limit. Since covid, it seems that drivers' risky behaviour has gotten worse. I regularly see cars going through red lights, or drivers on their phones. They're unlikely to be caught, so I understand why so many of them take the chance!

Don't see the point TBH. I live in a 20mph area and people still blast around. Put out whatever signs and road markings you want, but they are a waste of money unless GCC actually enforce them!
Prove to the public you can enforce the limits as they right now and maybe this will be viewed as more than yet another empty gesture.

Thank you for your comments, the existing mandatory 20mph limits were designed to be self-enforcing, however, Police Scotland do undertake enforcement when they witness speeding on any road. If you have any issues re speeding in your area, please let us know by contacting roadsafety@glasgow.gov.uk and we will investigate and liaise with Police Scotland where necessary.

20mph was brought into Bellahouston Drive up the side of the park. Due to lack of maintenance the road marking have all but disappeared and the cars and bikes just fly up and down the road. So even when GCC bring it in they don't look after the signs, so it becomes unenforceable. Before bring in more areas the older areas need some work and money spent on them.

Thank you for your comments, unfortunately, the 20mph speed limit on Bellahouston Drive was one of our older schemes (Twenty's Plenty) and was advisory as opposed to mandatory. As part of our current review, Bellahouston Drive will be considered for a mandatory 20mph, which if applied will include new signage etc. Please don't hesitate to contact us at roadsafety@glasgow.gov.uk if you have any concerns about speeding and we will investigate.

I fully support the rollout of a citywide 20mph speed limit. An opportunity should also be taken to reduce speed limits on other higher speed roads and develop more physical traffic calming measures for known problem areas.
However strong, regular and visible enforcement is required or the limits will be ignored.

Given the importance of the car to communities and the economy I do not support the 20mph plans. A very bad idea that will not work in practice. It is yet another attack on personal choice and simply an anti-car measure. There are a lot of people in poor communities who rely on their cars for day to day activities. Public transport cannot meet the demands of communities and there is the comfort, practicality and convenience of a car that no other mode of transport can match. 20mph zones will bring the economy to a grind and ironically lead to more emissions as cars spend more time on the road trying to get from one destination to another.

[citation needed], and the half of people who own cars in Glasgow are overwhelmingly not the poorer half.

Thank you for your comment, recent studies have shown households in Glasgow have access to 0.64 cars on average.

Thank you for your comments, the introduction of a 20mph limit across the city will have little or no impact on journey times as this is mainly controlled by junctions and traffic signals. The scheme does however have many positives, which include safer communities and hopefully a reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads. We would like to reduce car dependency and the number of KM travelled by car across the city, but we intend to achieve this by providing people with real alternative choices to the car which will not only help the environment , but encourage safe active travel, whilst supporting healthier communities.
