We acknowledge that Scotland was a prominent part of the British empire and benefited from and often spear heading colonialism.

We teach history in its entirety not a cherry picked redacted version. We acknowledge the achievements of the slave traders whilst simultaneously acknowledging that the slave trade was a bad thing. We do not however cherry pick which morals we judge these individuals by. Glasgow has a rich history and the infrastructure developed in this city would not have been possible without these individuals. We should teach the benefits these individuals funding provided whilst acknowledging the humanitarian issues. We should also teach that Scotland played a significant part in colonialism and also a significant part in dismantling the slave trade.

Current SQA course specifications for Atlantic Slave Trade topic place it in the British context. Argument to be made for more prescribed Scottish perspectives within British context. Atlantic Slave Trade currently the most common taught course in the British context at Nat 5, so the scope and reach of this change would have very positive implications in terms of education.
