Slavery and Colonial Legacy

Glasgow has a number of street names, statues and heritage sites that have direct ties to transatlantic slavery and colonialism. Some of these can be found in the Story Map. How do you feel about people who have been complicit in transatlantic slavery being commemorated in street names, heritage sites or statues?

I think that each statue, plaque etc should have a sign added to explain that person’s role in slavery, etc. if we remove everything, we run the risk of forgetting/disguising our place in history. If we forget our misdeeds we are doomed to repeat them.

History cannot be changed but information should be given on how these individuals made their money. Reparations should be made to countries/areas that suffered from the impact of slavery.

How far back do you suggest we take that? Should the Nordic nations pay reparations for the slavery of the Scots? Should the USA pay Ireland and Scotland for the white slaves? Should African nations also pay the white nations for the slaves they traded as well as paying themselves and their neighbours. Africa profited from the slave trade as well.
Or how about we stop looking backwards and focus on the now, where slavery is STILL happening in the middle east.

They shouldn't be commemorated, as by the act of commendation without context, there is an assumed objectivity. Therefore, the street names should be removed and a plaque replacing them explaining why they were removed.
