School Zone - fairly effective, but some parents (and carers) flaunt rules by driving within the zone, parking partially on pavements, across corners and dropped kerbs, keeping their engines running, driving the wrong way on one-way streets.
20mph limits on most streets - most drivers observe this but a few travel at speeds in excess. Restricted Parking Zone - has cleared a lot of kerb space and largely eliminated obstructive and inconsiderate parking, provides pedestrians with better lines of sight and gaps between vehicles which pedestrians, wheelers and cyclists can use as temporary refuges. Most of the streets are residential, very few have designated crossing places and pedestrians, rightly, can cross on their 'desire lines'. Dropped kerbs at almost all corners for easier transit for prams and wheelchairs. Speed bumps - effective to some extent, but cause road wear, potholes and puddling. One way systems - has largely reduced rat running. Kerb side railings - dangerous.

Thank you for your comments, we are working hard to upgrade older crossing facilities in the city, whilst our liveable neighbourhoods team help re-design existing local areas to encourage more active and sustainable transport. As we work to upgrade and improve older infrastructure, we also continually monitor where collisions occur and where necessary take action with our partners.

New segregated cycle paths have been created next to where I live which has been great however they aren’t respected by many car drivers who make illegal turns across the cycle lane at junctions, park on the cycle path, and drive across it / reverse across it without checking to get access to houses on the other side.

Thank you for your comments, the new highway code rules place more responsibility on drivers to look out for and give way to pedestrians and people on bikes. If you have any safety concerns about a local cycle path, please don't hesitate to contact RoadSafety@glasgow.gov.uk and we will look into it - photographs help :)

20 mph in East Pollokshields. Widely not adhered to. This is also due to - signs have been fallen off and never replaced, street markings are worn and nearly invisible, lack of enforcement anyway. This is directly on GCC, as has been reported many a times. Ongoing awareness by local schools to tackle the school run - limited success. Bollards to prevent parking on pavements - these have been damaged, removed at will, or are placed to allow cars and vans to drive onto the pavement. The effect is that some wider pavements have become private car parking spaces for businesses and individuals. Reported repeatedly, no action from GCC. Maintaining 'spaces for people' area permanently after the pandemic - creating a safe space. However, the full potential of the space is not used for the community. Could be widely improved through - amenities, seating, play areas. School Zone - does not work without ongoing enforcement.

Not "aware" of any as such but sure there are some! Not driving means I'm not particularly aware of what limits etc there are. Regardless, given many drivers complete disregard for my safety when I'm both cycling and on foot, I imagine they're not as effective as we'd like!

Thank you for your response, we deliver a number of behavioural change campaigns throughout the year to tackle issues such as speeding and poor road user behaviour. Our "lets look out for each other" campaign is due to hit TV screens over the winter period. Hopefully, recent changes to the Highway Code and campaigns, such as give me cycle space , will help make our roads safer for our most vulnerable road users.

Traffic slowing in school zones could be more effective. In particular, there is often no traffic slowing down on Darnley Road outside of Hutchesons Grammar School or around Shawlands Primary School on Pollokshaws Road. Could improved road markings and signage help with this? From personal experience, there are a lot of families that walk along Darnley Road towards the Crossmyloof intersection in the morning to get across to Shawlands Academy and the Primary School. Traffic is often going way too fast on that section of road, with the amount of small children on the pavement headed to school. Would a flashing speed sign help here? A speed camera? I believe this section of road goes from a 30mph to a 40mph and I don't perceive most drivers adhering to a 20mph speed in that section . As a parent taking their child to school along that stretch of Darnely Road, I often feel uncomfortable with the speed at cars wizzing past, when my child is cycling on the pavement adjacent. Thanks

Thank you for your input, Officers will review the vehicle speeds on the roads you have mentioned using our new speed analysis tool; and where necessary liaise with Police Scotland. The introduction of a city-wide mandatory 20mph should help reduce vehicle speeds , particularly around schools. Council Officers are currently reviewing the road markings and signage around Shawlands and may involve the school's appointed Junior Road Safety Officers to help create new 'unofficial signage' to support the official signage which is strictly controlled by Transport Scotland. Unfortunately, speed (safety cameras) can only be situated at sites where there is a known history of speed related injury collisions.

I am aware that many residential roads in the area are supposed to be 20mph, however without effective enforcement this is mostly theoretical. Speeding is a regular occurrence and there appear to be no consequence. Likewise, stopping on the double yellow zig zags outside schools. This is prohibited but occurs on a daily basis, often with engines idling. Without proper enforcement these laws are largely worthless. Would it be possible to establish a means that citizens could report abuses and receive a response?

Hi, thanks for your input, speeding concerns can be reported to your local police station or online via the Police Scotland website. You can also contact Roadsafety@glasgow.gov.uk with any road safety issues and we will investigate the matter and respond accordingly. Our Parking Attendants do regularly visit schools to undertake enforcement and I will ask for this area to be highlighted for a visit. As the mandatory 20mph limit will be city-wide, it will be enforced by Police Scotland in the same manner as they enforce the current 30mph limit.

There is a school zone at the end of my street but I don't feel it's effective. When I am commuting by bike at the same time as school pick up/drop off the amount of double parking, vehicle idling and other unsafe and inconsiderate behaviours exhibited by drivers dropping off kids is shocking.

That's correct, thank you for inputting. We have a Road Safety Unit responsible for road safety education, training, publicity and policy- as well as active school travel. The team are in schools every day engaging with pupils about road safety and how to stay safe when travelling. We also encourage schools to develop a school travel plan which includes walking and bike buses - this is in addition to providing kids with on road cycle training. The Go Safe Glasgow road safety partnership deliver 3/4 campaigns a year to encourage behavioural change. Sadly most collisions in the city involve some form of human error with the highest causation factor still being 'failing to look'. We have a new campaign planned for 2023 to ask all road users to look out for each other.

The only one I'm aware of is a policy of restricting traffic and parking around schools. As with all policies, it's only as effective as the enforcement, and so drivers continue to park outside schools as there is no enforcement.

Thank you for your comment, we continually engage with schools re this matter and work closely with our partners in Police Scotland to educate and enforce. If there is a particular problem with any individual school in your local community, please don't hesitate to contact us by email and we will make contact with the school to discuss. I'm not aware of any active campaigns. Once, about 12 years ago, I was undertaken on a roundabout in Govan. The car driver didn't see the police car as they were, presumably, too busy trying to undertake me on the roundabout. They were pulled over! That's the only time I've ever seen any enforcement to protect a cyclist.

Hello Crawford, Glasgow Road Policing officers regularly work with local polciing to run Operation close Pass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7ma6psvZm8) events throughout Glasgow. These are aimed at educating drivers and enforcementaction is taken if appropriate. We also have calendar of campaigns that target activity on specific areas to improve road safety, targeting specific issues. For example our Get Ready For Winter is coming up and will see us deploy officers to road checks around the city.

Thanks for your comments, we work closely with our partners in Police Scotland. I know they have been supporting the Give Me Space campaign for a number of years with active engagement with cyclists and prosecution of drivers. However, we need to do more; I take note of your comments and I will raise this at the next Go Safe Glasgow road safety partnership meeting.
