With the decriminalisation of parking, some residential streets have unsafe parking i.e. parking on corners which makes it difficult for pedestrians trying to cross the road as well as drivers who are unable to see what is coming. Parking on pavements also results in pedestrians having to walk onto the road to get past parked cars which can leave them vulnerable. This type of parking should be addressed.

Thank you for your comment. The Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 has introduced a ban on footway parking across Scotland, which will in due course allow the council to enforce vehicles parking on footways, vehicles double parking and vehicles parked at dropped kerb locations. The legal framework to permit enforcement is still in progress but we anticipate that these powers will be available to local authorities by early 2024.

In this respect, we have a number of white hatched markings on key junctions within our area. We are advised that these are only ‘advisory’ and no one can be prosecuted if they decide to park on them. It begs the question, ‘Why bother?’ Alternatively, as they are obviously put there because of perceived hazards, why not change their status to enable some kind of action to be permissible against people who park their vehicles on them?

Getting the city network up and running asap will help a lot, but will obviously take time.
Shorter term: enforcement - op close pass, dashcam/helmentcam submissions, parking fines

Thank you for your reply. Although their is no portal for dash cam or helmet cameras crimes can be reported via 101 or through the Police Scotland website and when an enquiry officer is assigned they can obtain the footage.

Thank you Jennifer. The Interim Delivery Plan for the City Network sets out the options for the look and feel of the City Network, while the Final Delivery Plan sets out the phasing of key sectors of the network for its delivery across the city. Both documents can be viewed at the Active Travel webpage: www.glasgow.gov.uk/activetravel.

          1. Reduce speeds to 20mph on all streets. 2. Introduce more 'tables' for continuous walking and wheeling and to slow vehicles. 3. redesign corners at junctions so that vehicles have to slow down to turn safely. 4. Remove kerb side railings. 5. Increase the frequency of bus services and have buses stop in-lane. 5. Replace signalised crossings with zebra crossings. 6. Have at least one no-traffic day on a number of streets each year. 7. Encourage more children to walk, wheel or cycle to school as in the Shawlands 'bike bus'. 8. Improve visibility and sightlines by repairing street lights promptly, having all hedges and vegetation cut to reasonable widths while maintaining greenery, widening pavements. 9. Reduce pavement clutter. 10, Clearing gutters, gullies and fallen leaves. 11. Promote local health walks.

Thank you for your input, the Shawlands Bike Bus is certainly a great example of how we can make change with just a little effort and support. More and more schools are seeking to do likewise and we are creating a new STARS (School Travel and Road Safety) website for schools to engage on this matter and seek support. We are also investing to change and upgrade older infrastructure and crossings as well as looking at creating more liveable neighbourhoods. This will take time, but all of the above is on the agenda to encourage more active travel, reduce collisions and reduce car use.

More parking wardens to stop illegal and obstructive parking, eg on double yellow lines, in cycle lanes, on pavements, at junctions. Traffic control at junctions, to stop drivers jumping red lights, to stop drivers going into advance cycle boxes, to stop drivers going into yellow hatched junction spaces. Far more checks on driver speeds and reinforcement of the city's 20mph speed limits - and 20 should mean 20. All these actions would pay for themselves by reducing the number of collisions, injuries and deaths and the associated calls on the emergency services.

Thank you for your response, we work closely with our colleagues in the Safety Camera partnership and regularly review collisions at junctions - where we identify red light running/speed as an issue, a camera will be considered. Our colleagues in Police Scotland can enforce cars encroaching into advanced stop lines (ASL) as well as yellow boxes, but unfortunately they have to be there at the time to do so. Getting cars to stay out of ASL's is something we need to do more about Hopefully the forthcoming mandatory city-wide 20mph limit will improve driver attitude and behaviour. I will raise this matter at our next Go Safe Glasgow road safety partnership.

Hi Patricia, thank you for your response. With regards to Parking issues if areas can be identified then enforcement can be arranged at those locations with restrictions and we can investigate the possibility of restrictions at locations that currently do not have them.

Any parking issues can be reported through our webpage at:
                https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=22257

                Thanks again for your input.

20 mph for all residential streets and for Kilmarnock Rd through Shawlands. Too many speeding drivers and high acceleration. Street needs demarcation to visually provide barriers to speed.

Our teams are always looking at innovation and design and where allowed by Transport Scotland we will undertake trials to improve matters for our most vulnerable road users.

prioritise walkers and cyclists by taking road space away from cars. Glasgow has huge numbers of wide roads with plenty space for segregated cycle lanes.

Thank you for your comments, Glasgow is committed to reducing car vehicle kilometres travelled by 30% by 2030, in addition to this we are creating liveable neighbourhoods and expanding our active travel infrastructure. As per our road safety plan and transport strategy, vulnerable road users are being prioritised in any planning and design decisions.

More education and enforcement of the existing rules to reduce events of speeding, running the red lights and dangerous driving. In many cases, the issue is not with the speed limit but with people not respecting it or not adopting the a safe behaviour when facing a hazardous situation. Adding more speed and traffic light cameras to discourage people from speeding and running the lights. Enforcing parking regulations to discourage people from parking on corners, too close to traffic lights, on cycle paths, double yellow lines, double parking etc to make it safer for everyone, keep the traffic more fluid and thus reduce the amount of rage on the road. Ensure pedestrians can cross safely without having to wait for so long at each crossroad: add more zebras and implement more smart lights. Simplify cycle path crossings: following a cycle path in Glasgow is often a slalom from pavement to road to cycle path that switch from left to right of the road without well thought through transitions

Thank you for your comments, with regards to speeding, we do analyse speed related casualties on a regular basis. Where we identify any areas of concern we do consider engineering works/traffic calming or liaise with the safety camera partnership. Unfortunately safety cameras can only be installed where we already have evidence of speed related casualties. You are right though, driving at the appropriate speed for the circumstances will prevent collisions.

Change the status quo. Rather than asking which roads should be closed to cars or be car restricted, make the default that roads are closed to private cars, and consult for drivers to make the case for allowing them access.
In the short term, more enforcement of dangerous and distracted driving, a portal for public submissions of bad parking, a reduction in street clutter and a clear network of segregated cycle lanes.

Thank you for your input, I will raise the enforcement issue with Police Scotland, but having worked in partnership for a number of years, I know how dedicated officers are to making our roads safer for everyone. We are aware of the build up of street clutter over the years and this is being addressed. You can report bad parking via the Glasgow App and action will be taken.
