I've selected 'bicycle and motorcycle safety' as a regular commuting cyclist. I'll likely experience 2 'near misses' each month - my preferred route has evolved to include segregated cycleways and quiet roads. Whilst most issues are with motor vehicles I've had issues with other cyclists (often delivery cyclists) and pedestrians - one jumped in front of me on the South West cycle route last month! I'm a driver too and I still can't understand the open hostility to cyclists - often when using the cycle boxes at traffic light junctions.

Thank you for your comments, we are currently working with Police Scotland to engage with delivery cyclists and the organisations involved in this growing industry. I'm pleased to hear that the cycle network in your area is evolving, as it is around the city. Work is ongoing with our partners to increase driver awareness and reduce the number of collisions involving vulnerable road users. If there are any specific junctions or routes that you may have concerns over, please let us know by emailing RoadSafety@glasgow.gov.uk

All of the above! Reckless, distracted driving and driving to avoid poor road conditions are all a significant danger when I'm cycling or walking

Many thanks for your contribution. Would you be able to elaborate on what you mean by 'poor road conditions'?

I do mean potholes in part... as a bike rider I often have to swerve to avoid them (ones which would bend my wheel, or possibly throw me off) which makes me unpredictable to other road traffic. But drivers are also trying to avoid them and doing their own manoeuvres. But poor road condition also refers to unsuitable road surfacing in general, there are number of cobbled cycle lanes in the city and also areas where there is a difference in height between two intersecting infrastructures which means directing a bike wheel over a slippy kerb stone at an angle. I am often worried about slipping into the path of traffic when trying these junctions.

All of the above. Many pedestrian cross dont give enough time for familes and old people to cross, and at some location cars get a full two cycles of Green lights before pedestrians get a green light, pedestrians should never have to wait several minuetes to cross. Speed limit should be 20MPH max across city of glasgow region. Rat runs through pedestrian areas should be closed such as Otago Street and over hill head from great george to gibson street, you could close these roads to through traffic without effecting local people.

Thank you for your comments. Any locations where pedestrians have to wait two full cycles can be reported on the council website at https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=20300 , or through the MyGlasgow app. With regard to speed limits , we are currently reviewing speed limits throughout the city with a view to introducing a mandatory 20mph speed limit on most residential roads.

                When on our bikes (either
me with the kids on my bike or me with my 6 year old cycling along side me) have been put at risk on a number of occasions due to drivers making illegal turns (eg turning right when the road does not allow it and driving across a cycle lane) or lorry drivers not checking for cyclists and pulling out from a parked position while we are passing. We have also been subjected to aggressive driving (passing us when there isn’t enough space and even on one occasion intentionally reversing towards us to push us off the road). Car driver behaviour towards cyclists has definitely been the biggest hazard for us.

Hello Jennifer. Glasgow Road Policing regularly run Operation Close Pass events to educate drivers to leave space for cyclists when passing.

If a driver acts aggressively as you describe I encourage you to report this via 101 to allow investigation.

Its very disappointing to hear of your experiences, especially when out riding with your children. Drivers should be aware of their duty to give way to people on bikes and pedestrians at junctions and we are currently working on a new road safety campaign for 2023 to highlight this. Please don't let this deter you and your family from cycling , but also please make note of any incidents and report them to the police who will investigate. Please also take care around large vehicles as they tend to have quite a few blind spots, particularly when turning. This is a matter our Go Safe Glasgow road safety partnership will be looking to address in the near future, to raise awareness of this issue. I do feel the Give Me Space campaign has improved driver behaviour, but we have a lot more work to do in this area.

Drivers should be aware, but there is no enforcement either! Some of the biggest risks and biggest agression in my experience comes from taxi (including Hacks, private hire and uber/glasgo) drivers and bus drivers. Those are particularly worrying as they are professional road users and should definitely know better. Generally driver impatience is my biggest concern when on the road as it makes drivers angry, frustrated and distracted - and more likely to kill or injure me.

Thanks for your response, we have worked in partnership with bus operators in the past and I do know they treat road safety as a priority in their training. We will review this and discuss what more can be done with our partners in Cycling Scotland to engage with bus and fleet operators. We do promote our road safety campaigns in the various taxi operator hubs throughout the year , but again we can review what more can be done to improve engagement in this area

All of the above, but speeders just make me nervous.

Thankfully, research shows that only a small minority of driver's choose to speed, but that's enough to make vulnerable road users feel uncomfortable. As a matter of course, we liaise with the Scottish Safety Camera Partnership as well as Police Scotland to educate, engage and where necessary enforce speed limits to reduce collisions. Where we know speed related collisions occur, we consider engineering and enforcement measures such as traffic calming or speed cameras. The new city-wide 20mph speed limit will help address the concerns of local communities.

Why can you only choose one answer? Road pot holes are a cause of damage and erratic driving.
